Summer is quite possibly the best season of them all. During summer, we get to spend even more time outdoors with friends and family. For many of us, summer is also the season for traveling. Traveling helps us experience so many different things, see new perspectives, and make memories that will last a lifetime. But we also need to stay healthy so we can have more summer seasons to travel. The best way to stay healthy is to stay active and exercise when we travel. All you need are a few ways to exercise while you travel in summer.
Travel opens us up to a variety of different things like food, sights, sounds, smells, and cultures. Sometimes when we travel, we stay close to home. Other times, we might visit a different side of the globe. No matter where we go, our health should always be a priority. Whether you’re working out to lose weight, to gain muscle, or just to stay active and healthy, you may need a few ways to exercise while you travel in summer. There are actually many different ways to exercise while you travel that won’t throw you off of your game or get in the way of having fun. You just need to be sure you implement them and remember that your health is the highest priority, no matter where you are.
While there are times when we throw caution to the wind and just go with the flow, most often, we plan ahead while we travel. We plan for activities, restaurants, entertainment, and so much more. Why not throw in planning workouts? You’re on vacation; enjoy it, but also sprinkle in a few workouts here and there. These workouts don’t need to be intense, they just need to help keep you on track. Depending on where you travel, you could also pack healthy snacks and meals with you so that you have a few healthy things to eat along the way. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with enjoying yourself when you travel, especially when it comes to cuisine. Just do it in moderation.
If you’re traveling within your own country, make sure to check for local gyms that accept your membership. If there are gyms nearby, add a visit there to your itinerary. This will ensure you don’t go too far off course and give you something to do in the morning before everyone else wakes up. If there isn’t a gym nearby that accepts your membership, check for hotel gyms or other local gyms that offer visitor passes. You never know what you may find and you may even find a gym you like more than the one at home. Either way, searching for local gyms is a good idea.
If there is no gym, anywhere in sight, you can use hotel room workouts as well. The most important thing is that you don’t go more than two consecutive days without any type of workout. This rule is a good one to follow, even if you’re at home. The 2-day rule will keep you on track and in good shape while you travel. It will also help you keep a rhythm that doesn’t throw you off course. Note that we’re talking about consecutive days, here. If your trip is 5 days long and you skip the first, third, and fifth, that’s fine. But if you skip days two and three you will want to make sure you workout on day four.
Some vacations are a little more active than others. There are often easy ways to throw in workouts without getting in the way of other activities. For example, if you plan on hiking during your trip, that counts as your workout. If you plan on swimming, that counts. If your hotel is on an upper level, using the stairs throughout the day counts. Keep track either mentally or digitally of the things you do that require physical exertion. This will help keep you motivated knowing that you are staying active even without a dumbbell or a resistance band. Fitness trackers are a great way to help keep track of these things. If you have a workout app that tracks all of your activity, now is the time to use it.
There is not a place on this earth or a vacation you can take that will prevent you from running. Go for a morning run around the cruise ship or the hotel block. In fact, going for a morning run is a great way to see the sights and get a feel for the area you’re visiting without looking like a tourist. You could also just go for a nightly walk or take a walking tour. There are so many different ways to get active without interfering with your vacation that it is hard to find excuses not to. Just remember to drink a lot of water and eat as healthy as possible while traveling.
